Bike Riding Without Helmet?

One of my sons had a worrying call the other day informing him that a good friend of his was in hospital having just had a rather bad accident whilst riding his bike. He fractured his neck and damaged his eye. Was he wearing a helmet? No!

Today his two younger brothers are off on a long bike ride to a shopping outlet. They inform me that they won't need to cycle on any major roads and of course, despite hearing the story from their older brother, will not be wearing helmets.

What is it about teenage boys that they think they are indestructable- until something happens of course? My consolation is that they have passed their cycling tests and have many bike miles behind them.
